Mental health issues are rampant on the show but are rarely addressed. Baptisms are "Naming Ceremonirs" and Weddings use no religious language and amount to "secular commitment ceremonies". God and faith are completely absent (in a way this show tries to prove that you don't need faith to have a good family while showing a dysfunctional family and troubled community) and dialogue uses "traditions" and "secular rituals" in place of religious sacraments. People of colour are rarely seen and when present are cast as "overly strict villains" with their kids or are presented in ways that might be considered "white" and when race issues are present its tropes (First Nations character being joked about by tourists). One character drinks heavily and drunk drives but faces no consequences nor is seen getting help to deal with alcoholism. Sex outside of marriage is commonplace and abortion is lightly implied with no real discussion about why it is not a solution to pregnancy.ĭrinking to excess is common and underage drinking is acceptable and conversations about underage drinking are rarely seen. Kids use crude and vulgar language around adults.įinancial issues are frequently discussed but the characters rarely have issues having money to get what they want which might give kids unrealistic views about money and what parents are capable of giving them. Kids are very rarely disciplined and when disciplined adults very rarely follow through. Kids have an unjustified sense of entitlement and will act out and break rules when they don't get their way and instead of being correcred, adults give in to their demands so that kids won't dislike them.

Kids often lie to get out of taking responsibility or facing consequences for their actions. Kids are treated equally to adults in a way that leads to instances of disrespect for adult authority.Īdults that demand respect from kids are cast as villains in their storylines when they are actually just being good parents.

Kids talk in disrespectful ways to adults who try to offer opinions, guidance and discipline. The thing that caught my attention was the dialogue between the kids and adults in episodes: Kids often address adults by their first names. I started watching because the horses and scenary were amazing (not many shows show the outdoors and animals in a naturalistic setting) but I quickly saw that under the sleek facade and wholesome premise that this is not the type of show that people of faith or/and morals should tune into-unless you are able to have deep discussions with your kids about why the actions of the characters are not appropriate. It looks good at a distance but looks can be deceiving. I’ll take Andy Griffith over this any day. Now before you come for me, I understand that we live in a secular culture that makes these interactions seem relatable but it’s my preference to not have to tamp down my convictions for some cheap entertainment.

Even equipped with the wisdom and experience to navigate these topics, I didn’t enjoy having to go through a bunch of mental gymnastics to find enjoyable aspects of the show. The adults have no problem divorcing when they’re no longer happy or running away when they feel confused abandoning their kids. This show regularly puts kids in situations that are governed by impulses and attraction. Not treat them as the objects of our affection. In our relationships we are suppose to honor that dignity with our fellowship with friends and family.

What sets Christianity apart from secular culture are the values that give human beings dignity above all other living creatures. My biggest rub with the stories is that it trivializes our relationships.
